This bilateral graph shows the rate trends for California. You can see that as one line of value increases, the other decreases.

Nominal area choropleth Map

This nominal map shows the highest population of minority groups in each state. Notice how hispanic is all located on the west coast and south coast by Mexico and the Caribbean and how Hawaii has highest Asian population.

Unstandardized choropleth Map

This unstandardized map shows how the Hispanic population has grown throughout the US. As you can see, there are more hispanics closer towards the Southern border states compared with the more Northern states.

Standardized Choropleth Map

This map shows the Canadian population distribution of people 14 years of age and younger.

Univariate choropleth map

This univariate map shows one variable. This map is showing urban living in the United States. Lighter areas correspond with fewer urban regions while darker regions correspond with higher urban regions.

Bivariate choropleth map

This map is comparing divorce rates in 1980 and 1990. This bivariate map uses color to compare and show two variables, which is the increase of divore rates from 1980 to 1990.

Unclassed choropleth map

http://www.esds.ac.uk/international/support/user_guides/gisoverview.asp

Unclassed choropleth maps use as many intervals as there are areal units. This map shows fertility rates in European countries. Darker shades represent higher fertility rates while lighter shades represent lower fertility rates.

Classed Choropleth Map

http://personal.uncc.edu/lagaro/2101/2101_ProjectsS2001/JonathanKozar.html

A classed chloropleth map combines areal units into a smaller number of groups and is portrayed in intervals. This map has 6 classification levels.

Range graded proportional circle map

The map above shows population of each region. Only five circle sizes are used in this map.

Continuously variable proportional circle map

This map shows which candidates are winning the presedential election between Obama and McCain. Blue circles show areas where the majority of the people voted democratic, while red circles represent the republican party.

DOQQ

http://www.crwr.utexas.edu/gis/gishydro00/Class/trmproj/Donnelly/termproject.htm

DOQQ stands for digital orthoquarter quads. It is a georectified raster image from aerial photos. This DOQQ shows a flood insurance rate for Texas.

DEM

http://www.hydroguam.net/map-topo-dem.php

DEM, or digital elevation model, shows the topography of a certain region. It is usually built by remote sensing. The map above shows the elevation of Guam. The red areas are higher in elevation compared to the blue areas which are lower in elevation.

DLG

DLG, or digital line graph, is another way in which the USGS represent cartographic information.

DRG

http://www.tceq.state.tx.us/gis/drg.html

DRG maps stand for digital raster graphic. It is a scanned and georectified USGS topoquad.

Isopleth

Isopleth maps simplify data with a continuous distribution. The map above uses the lines to show elevation above sea level.

Isopach

http://pubs.usgs.gov/pinatubo/spence/index.html

Isopach Maps are used to show rock or sediment thickness. The map above displays plinian tephra fall after a volcanic eruption in the Philippines.

Isohyet

Isohyet maps show precipitation and predicted rainfall of an area or region. This rainfall map of Tasmania shows the predicted amount of rain expected.

Isotach

http://www.whitsettnc.com/My_Homepage_Files/Download/WhitsettLighting.htm

Isotach lines connect points with equal wind speeds. Here you can see how each line is different wind speed, depending on its color.

Isobar

http://www.windfinder.com/mt-cgi/mt-search.cgi?tag=did%20you%20know&blog_id=1&IncludeBlogs=1

This isobar of Europe allows us to see the high and low pressure distribution across the continent. An isobar is a connecting line that shows equal atmospheric pressure, just as the map above.

LIDAIR

Lidair can detect elevation very accurately. Lidar uses a laser to amplify light by stimulating emission of radiation. This light detection and ranging provides a very detailed view of the forest.

Doppler Radar

Doppler radars are commonly used for track the motion of clouds as well as their composition of particles and precipitation. This is a doppler example of a hurricane headed towards Orlando. Doppler radars use a transmitter to emit a microwave radiation to measure reflected impulses of objects, hence determining the size and distance of hurricanes.

Black and White Aerial Photo

This black and white photo makes sorting out what building as what a bit difficult to do. With black and white, you can get the whole picture of what it's supposed to be, in this case the town Johnstown, but it is difficult to find specific places and buildings besides main highways.

Infrared Aerial Photo

This infrared photo shows the deep water channel in Sacremento, California. By using infrared, one is able to tell the difference between the water and the land. One could also tell if the water is contaminated with certain toxins by using infrared photos.

Cartographic animation

Cartographic Animation shows how one factor, such as temperature or climate, changes over time. This map shows how the percent of population over age 65 has changed over time in varying states.

Statistical Map

This statistical map of Africa shows the country's internet growth rate in the 1990s. As one can see, the majority of the country saw an increase in internet growth.

Cartogram Map

Cartograms distort space on a map to show value of something else. For example, this cartogram distorts the size of the countries, such as China and India, to show how the value of population varies from country to country.

Flow Map

This flow map shows the traffic flow of telecommunications in Europe. The thicker lines show a greater inflow of traffic between the two countries. Circular symbols show the outgoing traffic to other countries annually.

Isoline Map

This isoline map shows dewpoint temperature for the United States. Areas of the same value will be inside a continous line.

Proportional circle map

This proportional circle map shows Africa's population distribution in 1990. Bigger circles show areas of greater density while smaller circles show areas of fewer density.

Choropleth Map

This choropleth map of Canada shows density and percentages of people over the country. The darker the region, the more people inhabit the area. The lighter the color of a region, the less people that inhabit the area.

PLSS Map

PLSS maps facilitate ownership. The map will have an initial point, followed by an east-west line called a base line and a north-south line, called a principal meridian, which extend through the inital point. It contains horizontal lines at six-mile intervals that parallel the base line and establish townships. Vertical lines at six-mile intervals that parallel the principal meridian establish ranges.
